Last Sunday was the 94th Academy Awards and if you were anywhere on social media you would have seen all the buzz surrounding Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. It was very unexpected and shocking. Everyone has a different opinion on the matter, some think it was justified, others call it unprofessional. What do you think? Ethan Carrera said,” It was unprofessional, but it was a low blow from Chris Rock. His joke deserved it but Will should not have done that.” Both Ethan Sese and Eliana Carranza said,”I think it was funny.” Camila Gonzalez said,”Um I don’t really know, because Chris Rock was in the wrong for making a joke about her condition. But Will was literally laughing at the joke at first, but then saw jada mad. So to be honest they're both in the wrong. Also both of their outfits…slapped. It was interesting hearing from you all. In my opinion Will Smith did not act correctly. It was unprofessional, but I definitely think Chris Rock was wrong for commenting on Jada Smith's shaved head. Overall I think both sides were in the wrong. That's all I have for this week, now I want to know your opinion on the controversy.

![]() The idea of Feminism was created around the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Many think Feminism is a method on targeting men (who have human rights) and putting them down. This concept however, is inaccurate. Feminism is the belief of Women being equal to men. Feminism was never intended to put down other genders but rather trying to support Women in receiving Human Rights. As it being Women’s History Month, I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to present a poem towards the school. It was an exciting experience as I had never shared my own opinion physically. I dearly dedicated that poem to my best friends, Nevaeh Cardoza, Jazmine Recinos, Alyson Master and Zaylee Ballesteros. They were my clear inspiration into creating the poem and had been supporting me. I am so grateful to have such passionate friends about this topic. And I hope many people do as well. It’s not just about Human Rights but about the way young girls and Women get treated as well. And the concept of Feminism is what many of these people stand for because it’s what we want and what we deserve in the end really. All that matters is your voice, and your choice to stand up. -Kirsten G ![]() In the month of March we celebrate Women's History Month. This month we highlight the contributions of women. And before I tell you about these amazing women, I need you to know that if you have a problem with Women’s History Month or ask why there isn’t a month for this, or that. Please get over it. Women have overcome too much and have had their contributions swept under the rug for too long, so respectfully I ask you to stop complaining and get over yourselves. To start us off I will be talking about Diana, Princess of Wales. Princess Diana is someone loved by many for great reasons. She was a compassionate woman who visited homeless shelters and leprosy wards. She also raised awareness about AIDS and shook hands with them. Her death was devastating for many, but her memory and contributions live on. Next I will talk about Esther Jones. Many do not know but Esther Jones was the inspiration for Betty Boop. She was an African American jazz singer and entertainer from Harlem and was best known for her unique vocal style that featured “boop-boop-a-doops” and other similar scat sounds. Her Betty Boop character was whitewashed and she never received compensation for the millions her character made. Which is why we must know Esther Jones' name. The final inspirational woman I will speak about is Malala Yousafzai. Malala is a Pakistani activist who fought for women's education. She strived to give girls the same opportunities as boys and this made her a target. She was shot in the left side of her head, but that didn’t stop her. She continued her work and went on to be the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner. I recommend reading her book and learning more about her and her story! I hope that you learned something new from this blog post and share it with your family. Remember to celebrate the women in your life and tell them just how amazing they are. I would also like to shout out Kirsten Geil for her incredible poem. She did a great job and I hope she continues to share her work. Comment below a woman that inspires you in your own life. That's it for this week! Have a great weekend! Xoxo Stephanie You can ask plenty of other competitors who were at track and they’ll either tell the truth or lie about how they felt. It’s the idea of having other people watching you and competing against people you’ve never met and wondering how fast or excellent they are at an event.
If I’m being honest, when you’re running, you honestly can’t remember anything, like literally, you can’t. It’s just like you tell yourself to run and before you know it, you’re at the finish line. That’s how it felt when I competed for 100 meters and when my teams and I competed for the relay race. It was such an honor to be representing all 7th grade girls in our school for the relay race. It really was…but also very stressful. I remember how Jazmine grew quiet, how Nevaeh was nervously smiling or how Alyson was talking constantly. (Probably to divert her mind from running) It’s scary. I just saw my friends speeding down the track, like it went by so quickly. Before I knew it, Alyson handed me the baton and I was already done with the race. That’s running for ya, you don’t really know what’s going on until you’ve finished the event. It was a great opportunity to show women empowerment as well during track. It was a great experience to express that women can do anything. They really can, if only given the opportunity to do so. On a small note, congrats to all the track stars who competed! (And thank you Zaylee for recording some great videos of the Track meet) We did it! -Kirsten G ![]() If you know anything about me then you should know that I love to read, talk about books, and recommend books to others. That mostly is because in fourth grade Mrs Biggert showed us how wonderful reading can be and had everyone non stop reading by the end of the year. Thank you for that Mrs Biggert. So I want to share some books that your peers love and hopefully you will pick one up during the weekend and have a great time. First I asked Ethan Carrera, he said,”My favorite book is The Alchemist by Micheal Scott. The Alchemist is my favorite book because it is a book really similar to Harry Potter. The book focuses on Nicolas Flamel and twins Josh and Sophie Newman. They didn’t know it at the time but they are “The Twins of Legend.” Their purpose is to stop the dark elders from taking over the world and enslaving all mortals. The book includes going through different realms, meeting monsters, and other evil magicians such as Doctor John Dee (who is the main villain of the story.” Then I asked Camila Gonzalez and she said her favorite book was Twilight. When I asked her why she stated,”I like how chessy it is. Also because I like the whole vampire and wolves thing.” Finally Leila Ku said, ”My fav book is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before because the characters are so cute and the main character is Korean.” All of these books sound amazing and I definitely recommend picking one up! My favorite book is The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue. The story follows Adeline Larue, a girl who makes a deal with the devil for freedom to live her life, but the catch is that no one will remember her. Once she is out of sight from someone they completely forget who she is. But it all changes when 300 years later she meets a boy in New York who remembers her name. This book has some of the most beautiful writing I have ever read. It is lyrical, romantic, and intricate. Though it can be slow for some, it is a perfect book if you enjoy whimsical writing with interesting characters. Happy reading! Xoxo Stephanie ![]() Starting from March 1st to March 31st, is the time period of Women’s History Month. As a young girl, I’ve always thought women had all the rights they could have, the power to vote, the power to run for positions in society and so much more. However, through time, I found out that Women don’t have everything men have, young ladies and girls don’t get the same treatment as young men and boys. And it disappointed me the other day when a handful of people had never heard of Women’s History Month, it goes to show that Women don’t get the same needed attention throughout history as men do. So, I’ve decided, this month would be solely dedicated to the Rights of Women and what Feminism means. Not a lot of people understand what being a Women is and the power we hold as well as what Feminism really means and is not about bringing men down. I’d also love to dedicate the following blogs this month to all the young ladies within our Middle School. I hope this month you realize your potential as a Woman and that you have a purpose as one. Can’t wait to see what this month beholds for each and every one of us! -Kirsten G I…appreciate the sport of Soccer (futbol). Like seeing people who have the ability to do both foot and eye coordination is a great skill in my opinion. But I certainly don’t have the ability to do so.
This is the last week of soccer and I suppose it’s a great way to get students moving but it’s also a great source of entertainment. Like how the other day we got a whole entire period of watching people fall and miss a kick and it made PE so much more enjoyable. Everyone was really feeling it, of course, no rudeness intended…(or possibly there was) But there are also times where soccer can be terrifying. As someone who can’t kick even if their life depended on it, I can vouch for this. Playing the role of the goalie is probably the most eccentric role you can play. If you want an excuse to leave class, play goalie, you’ll most likely be aimed in the face and sent to the office. If you want an excuse to leave for the day, play goalie. It’s the most interesting role you can play on your team. Not only do you get blamed if you can’t block but you also get the ability to be targeted by your fellow peers! Doesn’t that sound lovely! Overall, soccer is a great sport. It’s impressive how people can enjoy this sport and still be really great at playing. It just takes skill (that I don’t acquire) to actually play the game. So credits to those who can play the sport, you guys got skill. Hoping you all enjoy your week! - Kirsten G ![]() This Friday was our second dance of the year and the theme was Hollywood. Now I know how I feel about the dance but I wanted to know what others thought about it. Jatziri Marquez, from 8th grade, said “The dance was good, I liked it. The music was good, and I didn’t eat.” I agree that the music could have been better. That was my biggest complaint but the food was good. We also have Ethan Sese. He said,” It was amongus.” When I asked him what that meant he said,”It means it was kind sussy.” Still not sure how he feels about the dance but maybe one of you will understand. Finally I asked Alex Isonhart. He stated, “ I think the dance was mid. The food was pretty good but the DJ was playing outdated songs.” I think a common thing I heard was that the DJ was not as good as the last one. There were also more people last time which made it more fun. But on the positive side the food was good and it was nice seeing everyone out of their uniforms and in fancy clothes. Now I want to know what you thought about the dance and what theme you would want the next one to be? Xoxo Stephanie ![]() For those Middle Schoolers reading today’s blog, most of us already know that there have been a lot of Social Media problems within our school. As someone who’s been at CVC since pre-school, I’m disappointed that there are students out there who would try and bring others down. Of course, I don’t want to sound like a teacher or some lecturer, no, I’m speaking out for plenty of other students within the Student Council who are quite shocked as well. As leaders of the school, it puts a bad image on our leadership and what we model within our CVC Community. It’s sad to say that plenty of students have been hurt due to how people are careless of their actions and don’t share any consent towards them. Social Media shouldn’t be taken lightly. I support the idea of using it to make people laugh, (as I do enjoy my own entertainment) but there’s a fine line between a joke and hurting people. You, being a Middle Schooler, know this, however, you don’t take the time to process your actions and tend to leap first before looking. Your words have power, it really depends on what you say that affects others. You have a choice whether to bring people up or to take them down. You have the option whether to lose the privilege of being a trustworthy friend or a fake face who puts on a show for others to see. t’s all on you and no one can change that except yourself. -Kirsten G |
