![]() In the month of February we celebrate Black History Month. It is a way of honoring the contributions that black people have made throughout history. This month it is important to reflect on the impact Black History has made and learn how to become a better accomplice to the black community. Now here are some black figures everyone should know about. First there is Diane Nash. She is a woman who helped start desegregation in the US and often demonstrated her passion for civil rights in her everyday life. There is also Olive Morris. She was a community organizer in South London in the 1970’s. She organized multiple protests and was the co-founder of the Brixton Black Women's Group and frequently challenged authority. Some other amazing people were Bessie Coleman, the first African American and first Native American to hold an international pilot's license. And finally Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to US Congress. These are just some examples of people we recognize and celebrate this month but I strongly urge you to do more research and learn more about Black History on your own. Happy Black History Month! Xoxo Stephanie

![]() There are plenty of holidays and events coming up this month! I’m quite excited for there not being school this Friday and I’m sure there are others as well who could agree. Not only that but the upcoming dance next Friday which everyone will soon be talking about, along with Valentine's Day this upcoming Monday. Also, special thanks to our wonderful Counselors during Counselor’s Week: Mrs Aguilar (She was my 4th Grade Teacher fun fact) , Mrs Angles, and Mr Chase. Thank you for all your hard work for the school, we really appreciate it! Now, honestly, Valentine’s is a day that…plenty of people can either argue or agree with. I find it an interesting holiday considering the fact that there are so many opinions and thoughts out there about the ‘holiday’. Which, speaking of opinions, quick question: Should Valentine’s be considered a Holiday? I don’t think it should. Sure, it’s a great idea but I also think that there shouldn’t just be one day where loved ones express their gratitude and affection to each other, it’s a messed up idea. But I’d love to hear your ideas, it’s a controversial topic so just share your opinion! Hoping you guys have a great week, stay tuned for Stephanie’s blog!
I recently watched the movie Encanto which you probably have heard of unless you are living under a rock. Some people say it doesn’t have a plot which is kind of true but it really focuses on family and the important role they have in life. Something I loved about the movie was how much diversity was shown among Latin people. They show different body types, skin color, and hair types. In my opinion I think the shining star of the whole movie is the soundtrack. I can’t even begin talking about how much I love the songs in this movie. A fun fact about the music is it was all created by Lin-Manule Miranda, the same person who plays Alexander Hamilton in the musical on Broadway. A movie Encanto reminded me of is Coco, Onward, and Book of Life. Overall I give the Movie a 9/10 and highly recommend watching it.
Xoxo Stephanie Assignments are tiring and take up a lot of your time as both a student and a teen who just needs to relax. Trust me, I know, throughout this year, 7th Grade has practically been the most challenging year for me.
But I’ve been managing it all, school, sports, extra curricular activities, family and events. The best method could be keeping track of your work or going over the assignment in class with your teacher. If you don’t understand the assignment, your teacher is your biggest resource so ask for help. Whenever I’m struggling on an assignment I ask for help, it helps relieve stress so you don’t end up spending hours on it. Another strategy could be tracking time, I suggest not touching your homework once you're out of school. Instead, take a fifteen-thirty minute break, this helps you, yourself from getting overwhelmed. Possibly take a shower, eat a snack or go on your phone to relax before you begin working. While you're working on your homework, work for thirty minutes then take a five minute break. Work in time sections and do one assignment at a time. One subject at a time and one task at a time. Don’t try scrunching up all your work for a few minutes, it’ll just cause chaos and disorganization within your work. As my last advice, try working with other students or friends. Not only with this boost your motivation to work, but ideas could be shared and engagement is a main factor within your learning. Working with others is one of my favorite and best methods, it keeps me in company yet is also helpful in a sense where you can enjoy working! Overall, chill and take a break at times. There’s got to be balance between your school life and at home life, find that balance and use it to your advantage. It’s better to start making habits now that will support your future later on. Have a great week! -Kirsten G <3 This week I wanted to talk about our new Basketball Intramurals. I have had the chance to play on a team before but I wanted to know what it was like for a new player. This is what Camila Gonzalez has to say,” The first day of basketball was really fun. We were laughing and making jokes. I felt like Stephen Curry, or like Shaq. But the only bad part was I started crying… I cried because I ate Takis before and I was getting stomach burns. I also cried because Mr. Estrada was teaching us some weird figure 8 basketball drill. I ALSO cried because I was laughing very hard all at the same time. So it was an experience. Basketball is really fun tho, i still recommend it.” There you go. Even with the struggles Camila faced she still loves basketball and recommends it. So make sure you go find Mr Amrine and join. You won’t regret it!
Xoxo Stephanie Well, this is it. Our last week of school before Christmas break. I know a lot of students, me included, are excited to take some time and enjoy the holiday season with their families. It can be difficult to stay focused during the last week before break but luckily we had some fun spirit days to help you end on a positive note. On Monday we had Ugly Sweater Day. This is a classic. Many students already had sweaters from previous years but if you are anything like me you still end up buying a new one. One Tuesday it was Dress as a Present Day. I saw many cute hair ribbons, bows, and wrapping paper. I decided to wear a literal present and wrapped a box with wrapping paper and put it over my head. I had a lot of fun doing it, even if a couple people gave me some weird stares. It was also a rainy day so many of us were shivering and rushing to get to our next class. I want to know if you prefer our warmer weather, or this cold rainy weather we get once and a while? We then had Dress as A Winter Character on Wednesday. I saw many fun characters. My favorites were definitely the Grinch and the characters. Which was your favorite? Thursday was Matching with Friends or wearing flannel and finally Friday we had Free Dress Day or Pajamas. I am definitely going with pajamas! I hope everyone enjoyed our Spirit Week and had fun dressing up. Remember to take time to yourself, enjoy waking up late, being at home, and spending time with family. I hope everyone has an amazing break!
Xoxo Stephanie Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa!
Or if you don’t celebrate, Happy Winter Break! Woo hoo! Three weeks of relaxation and chilling. We all need it. Despite the fact that our last break was only three weeks ago, I still need a brain break. I’m also really excited for this upcoming New Year as well, 2022! Yes! I’m not a ‘big goal oriented’ person, I may seem like it but I certainly am not able to keep track of those goals. I do try but the whole ‘Resolutions’ thing just doesn’t suit me, I’m pretty sure plenty of Middle Schoolers get what I mean. (Yeah, I see you.) But this year has certainly been eventful, not as eventful as 2020 but it was still eventful. We got a new president, there’s a new variant happening in the UK currently and kids ages 5-11 are able to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. So some ups and downs but we made it! I don’t have much to say about the upcoming year, I don’t want to get my hopes up too high. I’ve learned about having too high expectations in 2020 and I will not repeat that mistake again. I’ll simply just wish for the best. As well as hope and pray for a better year, who knows, maybe in 2022 will have its unforgettable memories as well. As always, take care and have a splendid Winter Break! Be sure to keep up with your Spirit Day Calendars, only two more days until break!
This Wednesday, 8th grade had their first park day of the year! It was a time to relax and celebrate all the hard work done this past trimester with friends and teachers. It was a nice day to be out in the park and everyone seemed to have a good time. There were rumors of a fight, but thankfully nothing happened. Personally, my favorite part was being able to forget about the stress of school and play volleyball with my friends. I wanted to know what you guys thought of park day and here is what you said. Camila Gonzalez said, ”My favorite part was seeing everyone being nice to each other, and everyone coming together to play Football and Volleyball.” Leila Ku said, ”I liked eating yummy food and being outside.” Now I want to know what your favorite part of park day was, and what you did?
Xoxo Stephanie Okay, so like… Middle School sucks. Sure, you get to see your friends and hang out with them but other than that… It sucks. Like it genuinely does.
The food, assignments, teachers (no offense) and drama… Everything about Middle School just screams torture. So this week (and in the following weeks ahead), I’ve decided to create a short series of guides on how to Survive Middle School. There were multiple requests to write about the food and water in our school. In which I’ve agreed to write about. Many people have complained about the water and currently, Mrs Avina's Ecology class is working to see if the water is purified and clean. I haven’t used fountain water often due to the hypothesis that the water here may not be clean. Most of the time I’ll bring my own bottled water. As for the cafeteria food I haven’t even gone in the lunch line at ALL this year because of my trauma from the past years. In my opinion, I’ve never enjoyed the cafeteria food. Sometimes the food isn’t fully warmed up, leaving cold icy parts in the food. Other times my macaroni would be hard and I wouldn’t be able to eat it without my teeth aching. I think many of you students would agree with my experiences. It’s a difficult topic to side on though, if I’m being honest. The topic seems way too far-fetched considering the fact that it’s hard to believe that our school would give unclean water and uncooked food. Our school is considered a ‘top school’ or a well-known one for having a great reputation. But it’s not healthy for students to be given horrid food and learn as well. If students can’t have food that is healthy or pleasing, how do you expect us to learn and do well in our studies? How do they expect us to be on top if we can’t even have simple needs? What do you think about this topic and what is your opinion on it? Take care! -Kirsten G <3 Welcome back! I hope everyone had an exciting Thanksgiving break and got to spend time with their family. While enjoying my Thanksgiving break I continued to see different interesting instagrams made by CVC students. Some include a ships account, feet account, and a couple other ones. The students behind those pages had to talk to the principal this morning and receive a punishment. In my personal opinion, I thought the pages were funny and didn’t harm anyone. At the same time I understand why the school would not be a fan of these pages. So I want to know, do you think the Instagram pages are harmful, and what type of consequences should they face? Have a great weekend!
