Cielo Vista Charter School to Celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3, 20129/8/2012 Cielo Vista Charter School in Palm Springs will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3, 2012. Approximately 300 students from Cielo Vista Charter School will be walking to school on Wednesday, October 3rd along with parents, teachers and community leaders. City of Palm Springs Councilmember Paul Lawen, Sustainability Manager Michelle Mician, Palm Springs Fire Department Division Fire Chief John Allen, Fire Fighter Danny Siegand, and the Demuth Park Neighborhood Association will join the students in raising awareness of the importance of having walkable neighborhoods and communities.
The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from Demuth Parkon Mesquite, Avenue, Palm Springs. Walkers will arrive at the Cielo Vista Charter School located at 650 S. Paseo Dorotea, Palm Springs at 8:00 a.m. Other special activities associated with the walk include a Crossfit Activity presented by Palm Springs Crossfit for students and parents at the park, water and snack provided by Palm Springs Unified School District Nutrition Services for student participants, and a Character Counts Assembly, beginning at 8:15 a.m. at the school. In 2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world. Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. The event is being organized by the Cielo Vista Parent Teacher Group.
